Koh Phangan, sometimes written 'Koh Pha Ngan', is a tropical island paradise in the Gulf of Thailand, 12 kms north of Koh Samui. The island has an area of 168 kms sq and a population of about 12,000. Koh Phangan is blessed with over 20 beautiful white sand beaches and has been a favourite holiday destination for backpackers and Thai people since the 1980s. King Rama V of Thailand visited Koh Phangan 14 times during his reign.

Koh Phangan has officially been designated as a zone for eco-tourism. 90% of the island is still unspoiled tropical forest containing an abundance of flora and fauna. Off the coast of Koh Phangan there is over 10 kms of coral reef. This means that there is plenty of opportunity for trekking, mountain biking, snorkelling and scuba diving on the island. Koh Phangan also offers other activities such as wakeboarding, archery, fishing, wind surfing, elephant riding and paint balling. For many, however, the main activity remains partying: there is the world famous Full Moon Party, the Half Moon Party, the Shiva Moon and the Black Moon Party. For other visitors to Koh Phangan the main activity is just to enjoy the sunshine and the beautiful beaches, to swim and get a Thai massage, to enjoy delicious Thai food and then lie in a hammock.
